We all know we should exercise on a regular basis. But why is it so hard to actually do? Learn how to simplify your workout routine and make it a lasting habit. #fitness #simpleliving via @idreamofsimple

A big part of my motivation for simplifying my life is to live more intentionally. For me that means spending more time with those people I love and that mean the most to me.

In order for me to be able to spend quality time with and play with my kids I need to be in the best health that I can be. I need to prioritize my health in addition to the health of my family.

It’s no good spending time trying to get my kids to be healthy if I just sit on the couch all day! They look to me as a role model and I want to set the best example that I can.

January’s simplicity challenge was focused on my heart and how to approach this year from a place of gratitude. February’s challenge was all about my mind and how to use meditation as a practice to help me be more mindful during the rest of my day.

This month I want to focus on moving my body. I feel so much better when I exercise so I know it’s important to my well being.

As winter (and being cooped up inside) comes to a close, March is the perfect time to refocus on your exercise routine!

Keep reading to learn the three things I will be doing this month to simplify my workout routine.

3 Small Actions To Simplify Your Workout Routine

Focusing on physical activity for this month ties directly into my one word for the year of BREATHE.  Naturally I wanted to not only focus on physical activity, but how to SIMPLIFY my workout routine as well.  Here are three things that I am doing this month to simplify my exercise routine and I hope that they can help you as well!

Commit to moving your body for 15 minutes every single day

These guidelines recommend that completing 75-150 minutes of moderate exercise per week was associated with a longer life span and a reduced risk of heart disease, diabetes and other illnesses.  If I do at least 15 minutes of physical activity per day I will achieve 105 minutes per week. I know that on days that I go for a jog or walk, I will exercise for much longer and will  easily reach the guideline of 75-150 minutes per week.

By starting super small, you remove the resistance to starting, which is often the hardest part.

So committing to 15 minutes per day is simply a minimum to get me moving my body and start developing the habit of exercise.

I plan to keep track of my progress this month in Evernote with a simple check box grid:

Simplify your workout routine by implementing these three simple actions.

Complete the 15 Days to a Healthier You e-course

I have talked about this course before, and I am committed to completing the course this month.  This course goes into much more than just exercise and presents a wholistic approach to wellness and prioritizing self care.

Like I mentioned in this post, if you sign up to complete the course with me, I will also be your accountability buddy!  That sounds fun, right??

You’re probably thinking, “That sounds awesome!  But, what does that actually mean, Tara?”

Well, at the end of each day I will share my thoughts, lessons learned and maybe even a photo of my homework.  This is meant to inspire you to keep going and know that you are not alone!!

Step 1: Sign up for the course here.

Step 2: Forward your confirmation email to tara@idreamofsimple.com!  Once I receive the request I’ll add you to the list and you’ll start receiving my feedback from the course!

Stop searching, start moving

If you do a quick Google or Pinterest search for “exercise routine” you will find millions of results.  This is great because you will never ever run out of ideas!  But if you are like me you can spend all your time searching for the perfect workout and end up pinning 100 articles, but never actually doing a workout!!

This month I am not allowed to search for anything new!  I want to simplify my routine and just stick to the basics.  This month I will focus on mixing up cardio, strength training, and mobility, but I will use what I already have in front of me.

To achieve this I brainstormed 3-5 activities in each category: cardio, strength, and mobility/stretching.  Do you want to come up with your own list?  Download your FREE worksheet below!

Here is what I came up with for my list, keeping in mind your list may look completely different, and that is ok!  The point is to stop searching for the next best workout, and just do a workout!!

My go-to cardio workouts:

  • Walking
  • Running
  • HIIT class at the gym (high intensity interval training – this hits cardio and strength at the same time!)
  • Spin class at the gym

My go-to strength training workouts:

My go-to stretching workouts:
