Do you dread the winter time?

The darker and shorter days…

The cold temperatures…

All the extra gear you have to put on just to leave the house…

Winter is a time when many people retreat indoors due to extreme weather outside. While it can be discouraging to spend so much time indoors, it doesn’t have to be!

I am not going to say that I LOVE the wintertime, but I have learned to enjoy this time by adopting what’s known as a hygge lifestyle.

And the best part, you can practice hygge too!

This gift guide is dedicated to some of the essential items that add hygge to your home and days. Know someone on your gift list who could use a little cozy? Keep reading to see my favorite picks.

But first, you’re probably wondering…

What is a Hygge Lifestyle?

This is one of the best hygge definitions that I have found:

Hygge (pronounced hue-guh not hoo-gah) is a Danish word used when acknowledging a feeling or moment, whether alone or with friends, at home or out, ordinary or extraordinary as cosy, charming or special.

Many Danes actually relate hygge to a feeling, rather than a certain object. If you are not feeling the sense of calm or coziness, then you’re probably not thinking about the word correctly. In other words, just having a cozy blanket on your couch doesn’t mean you are practicing hygge.

Hygge is also about taking an every day object or activity and making it into a ritual. This forces you to slow down, actually be present and feel a sense of calm. For example, you could take making a cup of coffee and break it down into a simple ritual:

  • Before you start, take a big deep breath.
  • Mindfully choose a coffee cup from your cupboard.
  • Open the bag of coffee and take a breath in to enjoy the aroma of your beans.
  • Add the beans and water to the coffee maker.
  • As the coffee is brewing focus on your senses: What does it smell like? What does it sound like? What do you see?
  • Then pour your cup of coffee, but before you taste it, smell it!
  • Then finally, take your first sip and notice what it tastes and feels like on your tongue.

This may seem silly and not something you can do every day…hello kids and getting to school on time!

But when you can take a few minutes to really slow down and pay attention to what you’re doing, your body and nervous system will thank you!

The gift guide below is a way to share this cozy and calm feeling with your loved ones. I hope that you are able to find something they will love!
