Inside: I share 12 new books that will inspire simple living in 2019. Read this post to add these inspiring simple living books to your “to be read” list!

must read simple living books

There are a TON of books about simple living and minimalism out there. More and more are popping up all the time! I even wrote a post about 10 books that inspired my simple living journey back in 2017.

While I still love that post and I still recommend those books, I wanted to highlight some of the newer books in the simple living space.

I have not read these books *yet* but I am excited to read some (hopefully all) of them this year.

Many of the authors are not new to me. I have been following their blogs and podcasts for quite a while. I hope that you will enjoy these books and learning more about the authors as well.

The benefits of reading books about simplifying your life

Before I get to my book recommendations for 2019, you might be wondering why I read so many books about simple living.

And I think that is a very good question!

So here are a few reasons that I spend so much time reading about simplifying my life.

  • It fosters a growth mindset: I believe that l by earning and applying new things I am able to improve my life.
  • It encourages me to try new things: I learn about different organizing or decluttering techniques I can apply to my own life.
  • They provide encouragement for when you get stuck!
  • It’s helpful to read about how others have made simple living work for them and then take the pieces that might work for you.

Without further ado, here are the simple living books that I am excited to read in 2019.

I have been a big fan of Denaye Barahona from the blog Simple Families for a long time! I have talked about her course, The Toy Detox, in this post about combatting toy clutter. This is her first book release and I can’t wait to check it out!

The Minimalist Way

Erica Layne is the creator behind the blog, The Life On Purpose Movement. On her homepage, she has the quote, “I want to do life, each day, each moment – less on autopilot and more on purpose.” I just love the mission behind Erica’s blog and can’t wait to read her new book as well.

Excerpt from Amazon:

“The Minimalist Way includes:

  • MINIMALIST PHILOSOPHY—outlines the principles of minimalism and shows you how to define the practice to fit your life.
  • THE MINIMALIST LIFESTYLE—teaches you how to apply minimalism to your spending, food, clothing, family, leisure time, work, and more.
  • REAL SOLUTIONS—that help you spend time and energy wisely, including checklists, activities, and troubleshooting tips.”

“Live simpler. Live better. Live minimalism.”

Outer Order, Inner Calm

Gretchen Rubin writes on her blog and in her books all about practical solutions for living happier, healthier, more productive and more creative lives. Her latest book, Outer Order, Inner Calm, illuminates one of her key realizations about happiness that for most people, outer order contributes to inner calm.

Excerpt from Amazon:

“Gretchen Rubin has found that getting control of our stuff makes us feel more in control of our lives. By getting rid of things we don’t use, don’t need, or don’t love, we free our minds (and our shelves) for what we truly value.

With a sense of fun, and a clear idea of what’s realistic for most people, Gretchen Rubin suggests dozens of manageable steps for creating a more serene, orderly environment—one that helps us to create the lives we want.”

An Edited Life

I love the tagline for this book: “Simple Steps to Streamlining Your Life, at Work and at Home.” I love that it combines both work life and home life because they are both part of who we are. The book provides a manual of sorts to streamline your money, self care, task list, and implement a capsule wardrobe, just to name a few.

In Anna Newton’s beautiful blog, The Anna Edit, she provides tips to simplify your beauty, life, and travels. I can’t wait to check out her new book!

Excerpt from Amazon:

“Declutter every aspect of your life — from your wardrobe, exercise schedule and food budget to your phone, bookshelves and beauty regime — with this realistic guide to getting neat and keeping things that way. “

Lightly

Francine Jay, aka Miss Minimalist, writes about living with less at her blog miss minimalist. On her website she provides practical advice to declutter your home and life and start living a more intentional and fulfilling life.

I can’t wait to check out her new book about decluttering and learning to live a lighter life.

Excerpt from Amazon:

“There’s no shortage of decluttering books on the market, but Lightly is different. It goes beyond decluttering – far beyond – to uplift your thoughts, your actions, every moment and aspect of your life. Learn how to lighten:

  • Your Stuff: create a serene space with your favorite things

Digital Minimalism

I think we could all use help in the digital space and this book appears to be that guide.

“The key to living well in a high tech world is to spend much less time using technology.”

Cal Newport

Excerpt from Amazon:

“Drawing on a diverse array of real-life examples, from Amish farmers to harried parents to Silicon Valley programmers, Newport identifies the common practices of digital minimalists and the ideas that underpin them. He shows how digital minimalists are rethinking their relationship to social media, rediscovering the pleasures of the offline world, and reconnecting with their inner selves through regular periods of solitude. He then shares strategies for integrating these practices into your life, starting with a thirty-day “digital declutter” process that has already helped thousands feel less overwhelmed and more in control.”

The Clutter Connection

This looks like a very interesting book about learning about the connection between personality types and clutter. I think learning about personality types is so fascinating and you can learn so much about yourself and how you interact with the world around you based on your individual personality.

If you have no idea what your personality is, Cassandra has a simple quiz you can take on her site. You’ll learn your organizing style and she will provide helpful tools and tips for you to be successful.

I took the quick quiz and I am a Ladybug! By completing this quiz I learned “Ladybugs are generally stressed out by surface clutter and like to keep their living space clean and clutter free.” Check and check!

I am excited to read this book and learn more about my organizing style!

Excerpt from Amazon:

“The Clutter Connection examines:

  • The four different organizing styles and how they relate to each other
  • How motivation and happiness can be directly affected by our space
  • The “3P’s” – Productivity, procrastination and perfectionism and how they are connected to your unique organizing style
  • How you can finally become clutter-free simply by knowing yourself better”

I love Melissa Michaels blog, The Inspired Room! She talks about decorating a home you love, but not at the cost of adding a bunch of clutter. And believe me, I need all the help I can gte in the decorating department. 🙂

Excerpt from Amazon:

“Dwelling will help you

  • learn to better care for your home environment so it takes care of you
  • make decisions that simplify your life
  • create more peace in your day
